About Poway
- Location: Poway is a part of San Diego County, located east of Carmel Mountain Ranch and Rancho Bernardo. Downtown San Diego is approximately 25 minutes southwest of Poway, while Escondido is a short 15 minute drive north.
Poway is famed for its rolling landscape which lends to its country atmosphere and outdoor recreational opportunities.
- Quick history: Before the Europeans came, the area we know today as Poway was once inhabited by Luiseno and Diegueno Indians. It was only in the late 1850s when the first non-native settler, Philip Crosthwaite, arrived. He built the first settlement in Poway, which consisted of a ranch and an adobe home.
By 1869, the area had enough settlers to warrant the creation of a post office. By the 1880s, more farms, ranches, and vineyards were established. The population grew to 800 by 1887. Poway also gained a reputation for producing peaches, grain, and alfalfa.
More growth continued in the 20th century. Finally, Poway was incorporated as a town in December 12, 1980. From 800 residents in 1887, Poway is now home to roughly 50,000 people.
